Seal Point Lighthouse

Seal Point Lighthouse is the strongest single sight around St Francis Bay. The white tower rises above Cape St Francis, with surf, reefs, and open ocean on three sides, and the view makes clear why ships needed a warning here.

Tours are sometimes available, and even from outside the lighthouse is worth the short drive. Combine it with a walk on the beach or the paths around the point, where the coast feels much less manicured than the canals back in town.

A story
Construction of Seal Point Lighthouse began in 1875 and the light first operated in 1878, when this coast was still a serious hazard for shipping. Its beam remains active, and the tower is one of the great landmarks of the Eastern Cape shore.
