The airstrip on Mount Thesiger is one of the easiest ways to understand Port St Johns' setting. From the top, the town, the Mzimvubu River mouth, the opposing peak of Mount Sullivan, and the broken Wild Coast shoreline fall into place.
The road climbs steeply and should be driven in daylight. Do not wander onto an active runway if aircraft are expected; treat it as a viewpoint, not a playground.
