The classic walk from Lushoto: a flat one-hour stroll west out of town along the ridge, ending at a sheer escarpment with one of the best views in East Africa. The Maasai Steppe stretches away below; a small lookout point on the cliff edge has a guardrail and a bench, and on weekends a few women sell tea and mandazi from a thatched shelter.
Most visitors combine the viewpoint with the adjoining Irente Farm, a Lutheran-mission-run smallholding that sells cheese, jam and home-baked bread. Lunch on the farm's open-air terrace — fresh cheese, dark rye, fruit — is the easiest reward for the walk back.
