Magamba Forest Reserve

A few kilometres above Lushoto town, Magamba is the most accessible block of the Usambara montane rainforest. Day trails through the trees take in fern-hung gullies, the colonial-era German bunkers known as the Kaiser Caves, and the small Mkuzi waterfall.

The forest is rich in birds — green-headed oriole, Usambara akalat, Usambara eagle-owl — and in chameleons of half a dozen endemic species. Local guides from the Lushoto Tourist Information Centre work on a fixed tariff; the longer routes (six to eight hours) take in viewpoints and tea estates on the way back down.

A story
The Usambara forests are among the oldest continually wooded places on the planet — they have stayed broadly the same kind of montane rainforest for at least 30 million years, which is why they hold so many species found nowhere else. The Usambara two-horned chameleon was first described from here.
