Mbeya Peak

Mbeya Peak rises to 2,834 metres above the city of Mbeya and offers a strenuous but non-technical hike through montane forest and open heathland to a summit with views stretching to Lake Malawi on a clear day. The route can be done in a day from Mbeya, but a local guide is strongly recommended — paths are poorly marked and the forest can disorient.

The Mbeya Range forest reserve that covers the upper slopes is one of the botanically richest areas in Tanzania, part of the Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot. Bird species endemic to the Southern Highlands, including the Njombe sunbird and Rungwe cisticola, can be seen along the trail. The climb is best attempted in the dry season (June–October) when paths are firmer and the summit views clearest.

A story
Mbeya Peak, at 2,834 metres, is the highest point of the Mbeya Range and was used by early European explorers as a landmark to navigate the high interior of what is now Tanzania. The mountain is part of the Mbeya Range forest reserve, one of the few areas in the Southern Highlands where intact montane forest has survived, sheltering the rare Udzungwa partridge and over 300 bird species.
