Kendwa Beach

Full-moon beach parties and calmer swimming than neighbouring Nungwi

Kendwa is a short walk south of Nungwi along the northwest coast, and while it shares the same clear water and white sand, it has a character of its own — younger, louder at night, and famous across East Africa for its full-moon beach parties. Held monthly at Kendwa Rocks, they draw visitors from across the island and from the mainland with bonfires, dancing, and an outdoor bar that runs until dawn. During the day, the beach is simply beautiful and far less hectic.

Like Nungwi, Kendwa benefits from the relatively stable tide on the northern coast. The water is swimmable at any state of the tide, and the reef just offshore offers easy snorkelling. At low tide, sandbanks emerge north of the beach that you can wade out to.

The beach remains quieter than Nungwi proper — fewer boats, fewer touts — partly because it is a short walk from the main road. Most guesthouses here are small, Italian-run, and relatively informal. Kendwa is a good base for anyone who wants easy beach access, good snorkelling, and the option of a late night, without committing to the resort infrastructure further north.
