Kpessosso Sacred Forest

The sacred grove of Kpessosso, on the edge of Glidji, is the spiritual heart of the Guin community. It is here that the new-year takin stone is hidden and divined each September, and where many of the senior religious ceremonies of the year take place. The grove is one of the more substantial pockets of intact coastal forest remaining in southern Togo — protected for centuries because of its religious significance.

Outside the festival season the grove is closed to non-initiates, though local priests will sometimes accompany respectful visitors to the perimeter and explain the significance of the site. Photography of the interior is not permitted, and trying to enter alone is a serious cultural offence. Ask in Glidji for a guide and expect to make a contribution to the upkeep of the shrines.
