Thatched House Museum

Rebuilt traditional Tristan cottage, furnished to show how island families once lived.

The Thatched House Museum is a reconstructed traditional Tristan cottage built from local volcanic stone and thatched with New Zealand flax. Inside are painted boards, salvaged-style furnishings, and the plain domestic details that shaped island life before modern materials arrived.

It is a small museum, but a useful one. Tristan's remoteness is easy to grasp on a map; this house shows what it meant in kitchens, bedrooms, repairs, and everyday improvisation.
