Forum and Temples

At ground level, Bulla Regia follows the standard plan of a prosperous Roman city: a forum (public square), surrounded by temples, a basilica (law court), and public baths. The forum area is extensive and gives a sense of the city's original scale — Bulla Regia was not a minor outpost but a genuine urban centre, prospering particularly under the patronage of the Severan emperors in the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries AD.

The Temple of Apollo is the best-preserved of the religious buildings, with several columns still standing. The baths complex nearby shows the typical Roman combination of hot, warm, and cold rooms (caldarium, tepidarium, frigidarium), though less intact than the Antonine Baths at Carthage. Walking the forum gives you the above-ground context for the underground villas — the public and the private faces of a Roman city that was, by any measure, doing very well for itself.
