The Douz Sahara Museum occupies a traditional-style building in the town and provides a useful introduction to the desert cultures of the Tunisian south before heading out into the dunes. The exhibits cover Bedouin material culture — tent making, camel equipment, traditional dress, jewellery, and agricultural tools adapted to desert conditions — along with panels on the ecology and geology of the Grand Erg Oriental.
The museum is well curated and not large, but it rewards an hour or so. The context it provides on the nomadic way of life makes subsequent encounters with the desert landscape feel more informed. Admission is modest.
