Makthar Museum

The Makthar Museum stands at the entrance to the archaeological site and was inaugurated in 1967. The collection is modest in scale but well-chosen: artefacts from excavations at Mactaris spanning the Numidian, Punic, Roman, Christian, and Byzantine periods. The standout pieces are the carved steles — funerary and votive monuments — including the Ghorfa steles discovered near the site in 1967, which provide insight into religious practice in Roman North Africa.

The museum is a good first stop before walking the site. Labels are in Arabic and French; very little is translated into English. Even without English captions the objects repay attention, particularly the Punic-era carved stone work that predates Roman conquest.
