Selja Gorge

A narrow ochre-red canyon cut by the Oued el Berka through the southern flank of the Jebel ech Cherb. The walls rise more than two hundred metres in places and the colours shift through red, orange, and yellow with the angle of the sun.

The gorge is best seen from the Lézard Rouge train, which runs along the floor of the canyon between Métlaoui and Redeyef. It can also be approached on foot from the Redeyef end for those with a guide and time to walk, though the train is the simpler option.

Some of the original ROC scenes from the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark were shot in the gorge — the long passenger-train sequence in the desert.
