Ksar Hadada

A fortified ksar turned hotel — Star Wars Phantom Menace filmed here

Ksar Hadada, about 35 kilometres northwest of Tataouine near the town of Ghomrassen, was used in 1997 as a filming location for Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, standing in as the slave quarters of Mos Espa where the young Anakin Skywalker was born. Unlike many of the region's ksour, which are simply preserved ruins, Ksar Hadada has been converted into a small hotel (the Hôtel Ksar Hadada), where you can actually sleep in a ghorfa — a vaulted stone chamber on the upper gallery. Whether or not you stay the night, it is worth stopping to walk the courtyard and see what a working ksar-hotel looks like.

The village of Ghomrassen nearby has its own cluster of ksour worth a brief detour. This whole area — Ghomrassen, Hadada, Guermessa — is sometimes overlooked in favour of the more famous Ksar Ouled Soltane, but the density of ksour here is remarkable and the crowds are thinner.
