Redcliff

Redcliff is Kwekwe's satellite town, ten kilometres south, built up around the ZISCO steelworks — once the largest integrated steel plant in sub-Saharan Africa, now largely idle. The town was carefully planned in the colonial era with leafy avenues, a golf course, schools, and a hospital; much of that infrastructure survives, though in a more weathered condition than its founders intended.

Driving past the disused furnaces and old company housing is a slightly melancholy reminder of how much of Zimbabwe's industrial economy has wound down. There has been talk for years of restarting the works under one investor or another. The town itself is friendly and worth a short detour from Kwekwe if you have an interest in industrial history.
