Khyber Pass Approach

East of Jalalabad, the road continues through Torkham at the Pakistan border and into the Khyber Pass — one of the most historically significant mountain passes in the world, connecting Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent through the Spin Ghar mountains. Every major army that invaded the subcontinent — Alexander, Timur, Babur, the British — came through this gap.

For travelers in the era when Afghanistan was accessible, the road from Jalalabad to the Khyber was a defining passage: the last stretch of the Hippie Trail, descending from the hills into the Pakistani city of Peshawar. Today the border crossing at Torkham is an active commercial gateway but not open to independent travellers without permits. The historical weight of the route remains, visible in the landscape of the pass itself.
