Ulu Temburong National Park

Ulu Temburong National Park is the main reason anyone travels to Bangar. The park protects some of the last undisturbed primary rainforest in Brunei — dense, layered, loud with insects and birds — and it is accessible only by longboat from Bangar's jetty, followed by a walk along raised boardwalks through the forest.

The centrepiece of any visit is the aluminium canopy walkway, which rises 60 metres above the forest floor and affords views across an unbroken expanse of trees that stretches to the horizon. In the early morning, the mist lies in the valleys and the birdsong is extraordinary. Most visitors access the park through licensed tour operators based in Bandar Seri Begawan, who handle the necessary permits and boat transport. Independent access is difficult and not recommended — the logistics require local knowledge and language.

A story
Ulu Temburong protects roughly 550 square kilometres of primary rainforest — one of the largest intact forest reserves in Borneo — yet fewer than 1% of its area is open to visitors. The rest is a strict research reserve. The canopy walkway was built specifically to give access without disturbing the forest floor ecosystems, and the view from the top, across an unbroken sea of jungle canopy, is one of the most remarkable you will find anywhere in Southeast Asia.
