Koh Kong Island

Cambodia's second-largest island, almost uninhabited, ringed by empty beaches

Cambodia's second-largest island, lying some 25 kilometres south of Koh Kong town. Seven long, undeveloped beaches face the Gulf of Thailand on its west side, with mangrove and rainforest behind. There is virtually no infrastructure — a couple of seasonal beach-shack restaurants, no resorts, and no overnight accommodation officially permitted.

Day trips from Koh Kong town are the way to see it: a 90-minute boat ride out, four or five hours on the beach with snorkelling and a barbecued lunch, then back. Tour operators in town arrange these for around $25 per person in a group. Bring sunscreen, water, and an underwater camera if you have one. Access can be restricted by the military at short notice.

A story
Koh Kong Island has been spared the resort development that smothered Sihanoukville's offshore islands largely because the Cambodian navy keeps a small base on its northern tip and access has been restricted at times. Day trips were officially blocked in 2019 and then reopened; ask in town for the current status. The island has no permanent settlements, no electricity grid, no roads.
