The 8 km Coloane Trail is the island's main hiking route, threading through secondary forest and up to Alto de Coloane — at 172 metres, the highest point in Macau. At the summit stands a large white statue of A-Ma, the patron deity of Macau (and the figure whose name the Portuguese corrupted into "Macau" itself). The statue, opened in 1998, is visible from much of the island and from across the water into China.
The views from the top are genuinely impressive: the Cotai reclamation spreading northward, the South China Sea, the hills of Guangdong on clear days. The trail passes through forest with over a hundred recorded bird species and is considerably quieter than any equivalent walk on the Macau peninsula. Start early on hot days — there is little shade on the upper section.
