Hac Sa — "black sand" in Cantonese — is the largest natural beach in Macau, a crescent of dark-coloured sand backed by the Hac Sa Reservoir Country Park. The natural volcanic minerals that once gave the sand its distinctive colour have largely been replaced by yellow imported sand, replenished to combat erosion, but the beach still has a different character from the artificial shorelines of Cotai: trees, a small stream running through it, and the hills behind.
It is popular with Macau families at weekends, with a restaurant strip along the road behind the beach and facilities for swimming. The Grand Coloane Resort sits above the eastern end. On weekdays it can be quietly empty. The country park behind offers trails through secondary forest, and Hac Sa Reservoir makes a calm starting point for walks up toward Alto de Coloane.
