Betel Nut Valley (Binglanggu) is an ethnic cultural park built around a Li and Miao village setting, offering demonstrations of traditional crafts, music, fire-walking, and the weaving traditions for which the Li are known. It is more commercially staged than authentic village encounters you might find inland, but the scale of what is preserved here — Li brocade weaving on backstrap looms, traditional costume, the architecture of Li thatched houses — is genuinely extensive, and the setting among the hills and bamboo groves is handsome.
The most compelling aspect is the presence of elderly Li women with traditional facial tattoos — a practice that was suppressed and has not been carried on by younger generations. These women are the last generation with the tattoos, and meeting them is increasingly rare. The fire-walking performances and minority song-and-dance shows are the more staged elements; the craft demonstrations and the chance to see the remaining tattooed women are what make the visit worthwhile. Allow two hours.
