Yanoda Rainforest

Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone is the better of Baoting's two major attractions, and one of the more convincing rainforest experiences in Hainan. The core attraction is a 40-minute to one-hour hike through a forested valley of substantial trees — some several hundred years old — with a stream running through the gorge and occasional waterfalls. The secondary forest has had decades to recover and feels genuinely dense in stretches, even if the entrance plaza with its shuttle buses and souvenir stalls is unmistakably a managed park.

Optional add-ons include abseiling, zip-lines over the canopy, and a bamboo raft section on the stream. These are worth doing if you have children or if the group needs something active; otherwise the walking trail alone justifies the visit. Go early to beat the day-tripper buses from Sanya, which typically arrive mid-morning. The air temperature is noticeably cooler than the coast, which is itself a reason to be here during Hainan's hot summer months.

A story
Yanoda takes its name from a Li language phrase meaning "this place." The forest contains trees several hundred years old and some of the best-preserved secondary rainforest in Hainan's highland interior. The Li people who inhabit these hills have been gathering medicinal plants, rattan, and timber here for generations — the marked hiking trails follow paths that existed long before the tourism infrastructure arrived.
