Jade Belt Beach (Yudai)

Jade Belt Beach (玉带滩, Yudai) is the sandbar at the tip of Bo'ao's peninsula where the Wanquan River finally meets the South China Sea. A short ferry crossing from the main waterfront brings you to a narrow strip of sand that stretches along the separation between river and ocean — calm river water on one side, open sea on the other, with views back towards the lighthouse and the town. The beach is undeveloped and largely crowd-free outside summer weekends.

The sandbar is narrow enough that you can stand at the water's edge on both sides within a few metres. The contrast between the smooth, dark-green river water and the blue-grey sea is striking on clear days. The Bo'ao Lighthouse, which emits three white flashes every nine seconds, stands at the northern edge of the peninsula. Swimming is possible on both the river and sea sides; the river side is calmer and preferred for this purpose. Bring water and shade — the sandbar offers neither.

A story
The Jade Belt sandbar separates the Wanquan River from the South China Sea at Bo'ao's peninsula tip — a narrow strip of white sand that curves between two bodies of water. At high tide it narrows to a sliver; at low tide it widens enough to walk its full length. The ferry crossing that gets you there takes about three minutes.
