Xinglong Hot Springs

The Xinglong Hot Spring Scenic Resort is the centrepiece of the town's tourist economy, a complex of outdoor pools fed by geothermal springs that maintain near-constant temperatures year-round. The water contains high concentrations of bicarbonate minerals and has a reputation across southern China as a therapeutic soak. The resort offers a range of pools at different temperatures, from the near-scalding feed at the source to more comfortable bathing pools.

Several hotels in town also pipe the spring water directly into guest rooms, which is Xinglong's most distinctive accommodation feature — you can lie in a proper mineral bath in your own bathroom without going anywhere. The resort's larger pools are better for socialising and watching the evening crowd, a mix of retired Chinese tourists and the occasional foreign visitor who has made it this far along the eastern Hainan coast. Entry fees are reasonable.

A story
The springs at Xinglong have been piped directly into hotel room bathtubs since the 1980s, when the state-run farm began developing tourism infrastructure. The mineral-rich water — rich in sodium bicarbonate and trace elements — maintains a temperature of around 60°C at source. Locals insist it cures arthritis and skin disorders; what is certain is that a long soak after a day on Hainan's beach roads feels very good indeed.
