Baligou Gorge

The Baligou gorge is a deep canyon cut through the Taihang escarpment in Huixian County, offering the most concentrated waterfall scenery in this section of northern Henan. The gorge takes its name from its length — "Baili" means eighty li, an old unit suggesting a long canyon — and is composed of a series of increasingly narrow sections culminating in the main fall. The water-carved limestone here has produced exactly the kind of slot canyon that makes Henan's mountain scenery so distinctive: vertical walls, clear streams, and an atmosphere that changes completely depending on the season and the water level.

The trail through the gorge involves some steps and fixed chains in the steeper sections, but is not technical. The round trip to the main waterfall and back takes about three hours at a comfortable pace. Combined with the nearby Guoliang Tunnel, it makes a full and worthwhile day in the Taihang mountains north of Xinxiang. The gorge is part of the Wanxianshan Scenic Area and shares the same ¥80 entry ticket.

A story
The Taihang Heavenly Waterfall — the main cascade at Baligou — drops into a canyon so narrow that at the bottom you look straight up a slot of sky. The fall itself is not always dramatic; in dry winters it reduces to a trickle. Come in spring snowmelt or after summer rain, when the volume is high and the spray creates a permanent rainbow at the base.
