Immediately east of Central, Wan Chai is where the old and new Hong Kong collide most visibly — wet markets and tong lau tenements along Stone Nullah Lane and Cross Street sit a block from the convention centre and the glass towers along the harbour. Once famous as the setting for Richard Mason's The World of Suzie Wong, the neighbourhood has gentrified but kept its edge: cha chaan tengs, old temples (Hung Shing, Pak Tai), tailors, and a dense cluster of restaurants and bars on Lockhart Road and Johnston Road. Wan Chai MTR puts you in the middle of it.
