Shangfeng Temple occupies the very summit of Zhurong Peak, making it the highest religious building on Mount Heng at 1,300 metres. It is a Buddhist temple — unusual for the summit of a mountain whose southern half is predominantly Taoist territory — and continues the mountain's tradition of the two faiths occupying the same sacred space without conflict. The resident monks maintain daily rituals regardless of weather.
The temple is small and often crowded with pilgrims who have made the full ascent. The building itself is not architecturally remarkable; what matters is the location and the atmosphere. Standing here on a clear morning, watching pilgrims arrive after the climb, with the forested ridges falling away on all sides, is a genuine experience of Chinese religious life as it has been practised for a thousand years.
