The Nüshu Cultural Village in Jiangyong County, about 90 kilometres southwest of Yongzhou city, is the primary site for understanding Nüshu — the world's only script invented by women for exclusive use by women. The village includes a museum of collected documents, textiles, and personal artifacts written in or decorated with the script; a demonstration area where trained cultural inheritors show the writing process; and a reconstructed traditional house representing the domestic spaces where Nüshu was produced.
The script itself is a syllabic writing system of around 400 characters, flowing and elongated in form, distinctly different from Chinese characters. It was used to write personal letters, poetry, and the lamentation songs that women composed for each other at the time of marriage — a practice that acknowledged the difficulty of leaving one's village and sworn sisters for an arranged union in a stranger's household. The cultural village provides context that transforms what might seem like an antiquarian curiosity into something genuinely moving. Getting there requires either hiring a car from Yongzhou city or taking a local bus to Jiangyong town and continuing by taxi.
