Qiandeng Ancient Town

Qiandeng is the quieter, more authentic counterpart to Zhouzhuang, 15 km south of Kunshan city. The ancient town has a 2,500-year history, stone bridges over its canal network, and slate-paved streets lined with Ming and Qing dynasty canal-side residences where daily life still happens rather than being performed for visitors. The contrast with Zhouzhuang is instructive: Qiandeng receives a fraction of the visitor numbers and has not been developed to the same commercial intensity.

The key sites include the former residence and tomb of Gu Yanwu, the 17th-century philosopher and classical scholar whose intellectual legacy was central to later Chinese reform movements, and the Qin Feng Pagoda, a Tang-era brick tower that anchors the old town's skyline. The town is also associated with Kunqu opera — the classical theatrical form that originated in this county — and occasional live performances are held in the old theatre. Getting there from Kunshan by taxi takes around 25 minutes.

A story
Qiandeng means "thousand lamps" in Chinese, a name that comes from an ancient legend about a monk who lit lamps here to guide travellers. The town's Thousand Lamp Museum displays over a thousand lamps dating from the Neolithic period through the modern era — a narrow but genuine collection that illuminates (literally and otherwise) the archaeology of light in China.
