Protestant Church (Evangelical Church)

The Evangelical Church on Jiangsu Lu, completed in 1910, is one of the most recognisable buildings in Qingdao — a red-brick Gothic structure with a clock tower visible from much of the old German quarter. It was built to serve the German Protestant community and remains an active congregation today.

The building is a striking piece of German colonial Wilhelmine architecture, with a pointed tower, Gothic windows, and terracotta tile roof. Services are held in Chinese. Visitors can usually look inside during opening hours; a small donation is appropriate. The church sits at a busy junction in the heart of the German concession, surrounded by other colonial-era buildings, making it a natural centrepiece for a walking tour of the district.
