Built in 1934, Zhanshan Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Qingdao and a working monastery with a resident community of monks. Unlike many Chinese temples that feel more like museums, this one has genuine religious activity — monks chanting in the main hall, incense burning in the courtyards, and pilgrims making offerings at dawn.
The temple is set in a shallow valley in the hills above the old German quarter, surrounded by pine forest. The main hall, dedicated to the Buddha of the future (Maitreya), contains large gilded statues, and a smaller hall holds Bodhisattvas and local deities. A vegetarian restaurant in the grounds is good for lunch. The temple holds major ceremonies on Buddhist holidays, which attract crowds and are worth seeing if the timing is right.
