The most pleasant part of central Shanghai to wander on foot. Established as a French settlement in 1849 and only handed back in 1943, the area kept its plane-tree-lined streets, low-rise Art Deco apartment blocks and walled garden villas while the rest of the city went vertical. It now holds the densest concentration of bars, indie boutiques and cafes in Shanghai — try Wukang Lu, Anfu Lu, Yongkang Lu and Xinle Lu. Look out for the Wukang Mansion (1924), a wedge-shaped Norman-style block at a six-way intersection, and the former residence of Sun Yat-sen on Xiangshan Lu.
