The civic heart of Chengdu, a vast plaza dominated by a giant white statue of Mao with arm raised in greeting — one of the few still standing in China. The Sichuan Science and Technology Museum sits on the north side, and the metro hub beneath connects most of the city. The square is at its best on summer evenings, when families gather around the dancing fountains and the surrounding shopping streets — Chunxi Lu just to the east — fill with crowds.
