Mounigou Valley

Mounigou Valley is a secondary scenic area about 40 kilometres from Songpan, part of the Huanglong scenic zone but with a character quite different from the main Huanglong valley. Its features include a series of travertine and calcified lakes — Toudao Lake, Erdao Lake, Swan Lake, and Feicui Lake — and several Tibetan Buddhist temples scattered through the valley. The terrain is at 2,800 to 3,600 metres and the air quality is noticeably thinner than at Songpan itself.

Access is by local bus or chartered vehicle from Songpan, with the journey taking about 40 minutes to an hour. The entrance fee is lower than Huanglong, and the crowds are significantly fewer. The valley's main path follows the river upstream for about eight kilometres before the main lake complex, and the section nearest the entrance, through open meadow with mountain views, is a good introduction even for those who don't make it to the upper lakes.

A story
Mounigou is part of the same scenic area as Huanglong but far less visited. The calcified lakes here — Erdao Lake, Swan Lake, Feicui (Emerald) Lake — are formed by the same geological process that creates Huanglong's famous terraced pools, but without the crowds that Huanglong attracts as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The valley was only opened to tourism in the 1990s, and its infrastructure remains sparse by Chinese national park standards.
