Walking north from Xiangcheng town through the valley toward traditional Tibetan settlements takes two to three hours at a comfortable pace and requires no guide. The path follows the river upstream through wheat terraces and past stone-walled fields, with the characteristic white cubic houses of the area — large, high-windowed, their exteriors chalked bright white — becoming more frequent as you move further from the town centre.
The walk passes several small villages where the daily patterns of agricultural life — wheat harvest in late summer, yak herding from permanent pastures — are visible without any mediation. There are no entry fees, no organised tours, and no facilities; bring your own water and leave the path as you find it. The mountains closing in at the valley's northern end are visible from the town, and the walk gives a clear sense of the terrain that makes Xiangcheng so naturally isolated.
