Shaxi's Friday Market is the clearest reminder that the town was once a stop on the Tea Horse Road. Bai villagers from the valley and Yi villagers from the mountains come in to trade produce, supplies, and livestock.
It is not staged only for visitors. Go early, keep out of the way of working traders, and watch the square fill with baskets, pack animals, and embroidered clothing from the surrounding villages.
