Moganshan is surrounded by one of the largest stands of managed bamboo forest in Zhejiang, running up every slope and filling the hillsides with a pale green light filtered through culms the diameter of a man's fist. A network of stone-paved trails winds through the forest, connecting the various villa districts and leading to viewpoints, small waterfalls, and summit areas. The trails are well-maintained and easy to follow; most visitors cover the main circuit in two to three hours.
The best time for the forest is early morning, when mist fills the lower slopes and the light enters horizontally through the bamboo stems. On weekday mornings in the off-season, it is possible to walk for an hour without passing another person, which makes the combination of the forest sounds — wind in the culms, birdsong, the distant percussion of woodcutters — genuinely restorative. Weekends in summer and autumn bring Shanghai crowds, and the trails become considerably more social.
