Mapusa Friday Market

The Mapusa Municipal Market — the Friday Market — is the main event in Mapusa and one of the most interesting markets in Goa. Every Friday, traders set up stalls inside and around the large covered market building, selling everything from vegetables and spices to clothes, household goods, and souvenirs. It draws buyers from across northern Goa including residents of the beach resorts who come specifically for the fresh produce and better prices.

The vegetable section is the heart of it: piled high with the distinctively Goan seasonal vegetables — drumstick, bitter gourd, raw jackfruit, fresh coconut — alongside the more universal offerings. The spice stalls are worth lingering over; cardamom, kokum, and the distinctive Goan chilli paste are all available in good quality. The market gets very busy between 10 am and noon; arriving early means better selection and cooler temperatures.

A story
Mapusa's Friday Market draws traders from across Goa and the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharashtra. You can buy Kashmiri shawls from traders who spend the winter in Goa, fresh fish from the morning's catch at the coast, spices grown in the Sahyadri hills, and cheap clothes stitched in Panaji. The blend of communities — Goan Hindu, Goan Catholic, Muslim traders, and tourists — makes it one of the most genuinely mixed markets in North Goa.
