St Anthony's Church

The small whitewashed church inside the walls of Fort Tiracol is dedicated to St Anthony of Padua and dates from the 1750s, just after the Portuguese took back the fort from the Marathas. Two slim bell towers flank a high baroque gable; the interior is plain and cool, with a wooden ceiling and a simple wooden altar. Mass is still said here on Sundays and on the feast of St Anthony every June.

The church doors are usually open during daylight hours; visitors can wander in and out for free, and the caretaker is happy to show you the small wooden statues and the candles burning at the back. The courtyard outside, with the church's white facade and the red fort wall behind, is one of the most photogenic corners in north Goa.
