Tiracol River Estuary

The Tiracol River (sometimes Terekhol) is the natural border between Goa and Maharashtra, and at its mouth — directly below Fort Tiracol — it widens into a broad tidal estuary fringed with mangroves. The water shimmers between blue, grey, and silver depending on the time of day; the small fishing boats of the village pull up on the flats at low tide; egrets and brahminy kites work the shallows.

The fort terrace gives the best vantage, but a footpath leads down to a small jetty where the ferry to Querim docks and where you can hire a local boatman for an hour-long upstream paddle to see kingfishers, crocodiles, and the small fishing villages further inland. Sunsets are spectacular from anywhere along the headland; bring a long lens for the boats.
