Deendayal Port — named in 2017 after the ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, though most locals still call it Kandla Port — is the economic heartbeat of this corner of Gujarat. The port sits on a tidal creek off the Gulf of Kutch, and its position gives it a naturally sheltered deep-water anchorage that made it the obvious replacement for Karachi after Partition.
Visitors cannot enter the active port area, but the approach road and the waterfront near the ferry jetty give a clear sense of the scale: long lines of cargo vessels at anchor in the creek, grain elevators visible on the far bank, and a constant low-level rumble of machinery. The ferry that crosses the creek to Tuna village offers a closer look without any of the port's security restrictions. It runs several times a day and costs very little — most passengers are workers, but the short crossing gives a good vantage point over the working harbour.
