Indus Valley Ruins

The excavated ruins of the Lothal settlement cover several distinct zones: a residential upper town, a lower commercial quarter, and the warehouse district where excavators found rows of burnt brick platforms thought to have supported goods awaiting shipment. Walking through these areas, you can trace the outlines of individual houses, identify where hearths stood, and see the remains of the city's famous brick-lined drainage channels running beneath the streets.

The site is open-air and largely unshaded. Early morning is the best time to visit — both for the cooler temperatures and the quality of light on the brick surfaces. Interpretive signboards at key locations explain what each area was thought to be used for, though some of the signage has weathered badly.

A story
The drainage system at Lothal was so well designed that individual houses had private drains connecting to covered street drains — a level of urban sanitation not seen again in the Indian subcontinent for another four millennia.
