The Modheshwari Mata Temple is an active Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Modheshwari, the patron deity of the Modhera region. Unlike the nearby Sun Temple — which has been a protected monument since the colonial period and no longer functions as a place of worship — this temple is very much alive, with daily pujas and a stream of local devotees. The goddess is considered the mother deity of the Modh Brahmin community, one of the traditional priestly lineages of Gujarat.
The temple is a short walk from the Sun Temple complex and provides an instructive contrast: where the Sun Temple is grand, silent, and managed at a distance by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Modheshwari temple is small, active, and distinctly local. Visitors are welcome but should remove shoes, dress conservatively, and be respectful of ongoing worship. This is not primarily a tourist attraction — it is a working temple that has been serving its community for centuries.
