Surya Kund (Stepped Tank)

The Surya Kund stands directly in front of the Sun Temple and is as impressive as the temple itself. This stepped tank — a rectangular reservoir with stepped sides descending in geometric stages to the water — is one of the finest examples of the vav (stepwell) tradition in Gujarat. The steps are arranged in perfect mathematical proportions, and the small shrine niches set into the walls at each level originally held carved deity images.

The tank's setting gives the whole complex its most memorable vista. Standing at the water's edge looking back at the temple reflected in the still water on a calm morning, with the geometric steps and the distant shikhara tower framing each other, is one of those views that explains why people travel. The tank remains full of water and is considered sacred; swimming in it is not appropriate, but walking around it takes about twenty minutes and rewards close attention to the carved details.

A story
The Surya Kund is not merely decorative — it was a functional ritual bathing tank where worshippers purified themselves before entering the temple. The over a hundred shrine niches set into the steps and walls would have held individual images of deities, creating a pilgrimage within the pilgrimage. Most of the images have been removed or destroyed, but the structural geometry of the tank is perfectly intact.
