Morbi produces 70% of India's ceramic tiles — visit factory showrooms and tile markets

Morbi is India's ceramics capital, producing roughly 70 percent of the country's ceramic and vitrified tiles, porcelain sanitary ware, and floor tiles. The industry grew from a traditional pottery-making background and now operates on an industrial scale: there are over 600 ceramic manufacturing units in and around the city, and the exports reach more than 100 countries.

For visitors with an interest in industry or design, the factory showrooms and the tile markets along the National Highway are worth seeing. Prices for tiles are significantly lower here than elsewhere in India, and many manufacturers have export-oriented showrooms that welcome walk-in customers. The tile designs range from basic construction materials to high-end decorative porcelain that mimics Italian marble or Moroccan zellige.

Ajanta Industries (clocks and watches) is also based in Morbi — the company claims to be the world's largest clock manufacturer by volume. The clock factory is not open to visitors, but the Morbi Rajkot road is lined with wholesale clock dealers.
