Kirti Torana

Pair of Solanki-era ceremonial gateways carved in yellow-red sandstone.

The Kirti Torana are Vadnagar's most elegant monuments: two freestanding ceremonial gateways from the Solanki period, standing near Sharmishtha Lake just outside the old fortified town. They are built in yellow-red sandstone and decorated with hunting and battle scenes, floral bands, animals, and divine figures.

The toranas probably belonged to a larger temple complex that has disappeared, which makes them feel a little mysterious. What remains is enough. The proportions are tall and light, the carving is crisp, and the gateways show the same western Indian architectural world that produced the great monuments at Modhera and Siddhpur.
