Kangra Valley Railway

Joginder Nagar is the eastern terminus of the Kangra Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge line that winds through the foothills with views of the Dhauladhar range looming to the north. The train takes about ten hours to reach Pathankot, which is far slower than the bus, but it remains one of the most enjoyable rail journeys in the western Himalayas.

Carriages are simple and unreserved on most services, the windows open, and tea sellers swing aboard at every halt. The station building at Joginder Nagar is a small, atmospheric piece of colonial infrastructure and worth a visit even if you do not plan to ride the train.

A story
The narrow-gauge line was opened in 1929 to serve the Shanan hydro project and the agricultural traffic of the Kangra valley. Its 164-kilometre run from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar crosses some 970 bridges and culverts and was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status as part of India's Mountain Railways.
