Shasur Gompa sits about 3 kilometres from Keylong on a rocky spur above the Bhaga valley, surrounded by a grove of blue pine trees that makes it unusual and scenic even from a distance. The name "Shasur" means "new monastery," though it is anything but recent — it was founded in the 17th century. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa school (the same school as the Dalai Lama) and has a small but active community.
The walk up from Keylong through terraced fields and small villages is pleasant and takes about an hour. The monastery itself has colourful murals, a collection of thangka paintings, and an atmosphere of calm that makes it a good complement to the grander Kardang across the river. The annual festival here — like most Lahaul monasteries — involves masked Chham dances that attract locals from the surrounding valleys.
