The estuary where the Waghotan Creek enters the sea at Vijaydurga is one of the most reliable spots on the Konkan coast to see dolphins. Resident populations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and bottlenose dolphins feed in the shallow waters of the creek mouth, and local fishermen will sometimes take visitors out in their boats in the early morning. Early October to May is the best season — from June to September the monsoon makes the sea too rough.
The creek itself is worth exploring by boat even if dolphins are elusive. The backwaters wind through mangroves and cashew orchards, and birdlife is plentiful — kingfishers, herons, and migratory waders in winter. The fishing village on the south bank of the creek has a small boat jetty where arrangements can be made with fishermen.
