Daitya Sudan Temple

A 12th-century Hindu temple near the rim of the Lonar Crater

Daitya Sudan — "Slayer of Demons" — is a Hemadanti-style temple from the Chalukya period, probably 12th century, dedicated to Vishnu in his form as the destroyer of the demon Lonasura. Local legend says the crater was made when Vishnu struck Lonasura down on this spot.

The temple is built of finely cut basalt blocks fitted without mortar, in the elaborate carved geometry typical of the late Chalukyan style. The exterior carvings are remarkable — multiple registers of figures, including some erotic panels in the manner of Khajuraho — and the inner sanctum still contains an image of Vishnu. It is far less visited than the obvious comparators in Karnataka, which is part of the appeal. Pair with the descent into the crater rim, ten minutes' walk away.
