Bhatye Beach

Bhatye Beach stretches along the edge of Ratnagiri town where the Bhatye Creek opens into the Arabian Sea. It is a calm, sheltered beach backed by casuarina trees and is the most accessible of the beaches in the Ratnagiri area — a short auto-rickshaw ride from the town centre. The water is calmer here than at the exposed Atlantic beaches north and south, which makes it better for swimming.

The beach comes alive in the evening when local families stroll along the shoreline and the vendors set up chaat and fresh coconut stalls. At the northern end, you can see the outline of Ratnadurga Fort on its headland, which makes for a good photograph at sunset. This is not a dramatic beach in the Goa style; it is instead the kind of quiet, lived-in place that travel writers tend to overlook.
